KOTA KINABALU: Sabah-based Jawala Plantation Industries Sdn Bhd (JPISB), which has been involved in forest plantation in Sabah since 2016, received the 2022 Malaysia Outstanding ESG (Environment, Social and Governance) Impact Corporate Excellence Award at Kuala Lumpur, recently. JPISB is subsidiary of Jawala Inc. a company listed on the Singapore Exchange (SGX) specialising on sustainable forest management with focus on forest plantation development.

Its Group Chief Executive Officer Rahman Khan, who is also Vice President of Sabah Timber Industries Association (STIA), said the company is honoured and thankful to receive the prestigious award that recognises and celebrates the company’s success and great achievements in
ESG.He said the award would enhance the company’s recognition, credibility and vision as well as to inspire other Sabah companies to achieve the same.

“This is a big step forward for us and all the recipients in Malaysia. Please remember three things – people, planet and prosperity. “These are strong reminders for us to take good care of our planet. Plant more trees, use renewable materials and energy. I hope the Government will respond positively to assist companies and the people in encouraging the use of renewable and recyclable materials to respond to the effects of climate change.

“Making renewable and eco-friendly materials more cost effective and affordable will be a challenge. This is where the Government must take immediate steps to incentivise the development and use of these materials and resources,” he said when contacted, recently. In response to climate change, Rahman said JPISB has initiated the use of renewable energy at its operation area, conservation initiatives, community development and the development of industrial tree plantations to replace and substitute the use of tropical logs for Sabah’s timber industry.

“This will result in greater conservancy, sustainability and renewability of our forest resources and those who depend on them.

“We thank the Sabah Government for its strong support to further enhance and transform the forest plantation sector, our special thanks to Sabah Forestry Department for making this award possible through its professional and dedicated team and its sound policies on sustainable forest management.

“We also thank our customers and suppliers for their strong support all this while,” he said. In 2016, JPISB was awarded 11,043 hectares in Sapulut, Keningau by the Sabah Government to plant, rehabilitate and harvest forests under the principle of the Sustainable Forest Management Licence Agreement (SFMLA). The ESG Impact Awards are conferred on companies, in particular SMEs and social enterprises, with a track record of successful implementation of ESG practices and they are also recognised for their corporate efforts in diversity and inclusion.

They are role models for the community in advancing the SDGs. The active adoption and effective execution of ESG and SDG goals will contribute to developing an inclusive and sustainable society.
